No. 39 Men's Tennis Upset by UC Santa Barbara

FRESNO, Calif. - Matthew Coin's decisive three-set comeback win at No. 6 singles gave UC Santa Barbara a 4-3 upset victory over 39th-ranked Fresno State on Friday at the Santa Barbara Cathedral Oaks Athletic Club.
The loss was the first of the year for the Bulldogs (11-7) against an unranked opponent. Fresno State had won four in a row.
Coin clinched the match against Sergiu Modoc after trailing 6-1, 5-2. Modoc even held two match points while ahead 5-2 in the second set. But at that point, Coin, a junior, came back to win that game and eventually reeled off 11 consecutive games to emerge victorious 1-6, 7-5, 6-0 to hand an unlikely triumph to the Gauchos (11-6), who have now won three in a row.
Fresno State started well, winning two of the three doubles matches for a 1-0 lead heading into singles. Until today's loss, the Bulldogs had been 9-1 on the year when winning the doubles point.
Singles started in rocky fashion for Fresno State, which fell behind 3-1 after straight-set losses at Nos. 1, 4 and 5. But the Bulldogs battled back to 3-3 after wins by Stefan Suta at No. 2 and Charles Irie at No. 3.
Suta's victory made the dual score 3-3, at which point Coin was well into the throes of his come-from-behind win.
Fresno State was playing without No. 1 singles player Greg Shearer, who missed the match due to a violation of team policy.
The Bulldogs return to the court Saturday at 1 p.m. for a match against No. 20 Pepperdine at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center in Malibu, Calif. The contest with the Waves is the team's regular season road finale.
