HOUSTON- Due to severe weather in the Houston area, day two of the 2004 WAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships at the Rice Track/Soccer Stadium has been suspended.
A mixture of hard rain and thunderstorms, coupled with four failed attempts to resume competition ultimately forced the suspension of the meet. In fact, the majority of the Bulldog squad (a large second group scheduled to arrive this afternoon to compete in Fiday's field and running events) had yet to depart from Sacramento as of 7 p.m. PST due to weather conditions at Houston International Airport.
In addition, a couple of other schools had yet to arrive in Houston on schedule.
The final three events of the heptathlon will begin at 9 am on Friday. The remainder of the decathlon has been cancelled with the results after five events providing the placing towards team scoring. Since the Bulldogs currently own the Nos. 2,3,6 and 7 spots in the decathlon, Fresno State holds an early 19-15 lead over host Rice.
Weather permitting, the meet will continue as scheduled with the women's hammer throw starting at 2:30 pm and the prelims of the 1500 opening the running events at 5 pm. The championships continue through Saturday.
