Track and Field Announces Signing Of Four Recruits

FRESNO, Calif.- The Fresno State track and field program has announced the addition of four student-athletes, all of whom have signed national letters-of-intent to join the Bulldog squad for the 2004-05 season.
"This group of athletes has the ability to make immediate contributions," said head coach Bob Fraley. "We are very excited that they are joining our program and they should help us challenge in both individual and conference competition."
The following is a breakdown of the recent signees:
- Juan Valdez
Visalia, Calif...Golden West HS
...hurdles/relays...possible candidate to join Bulldogs' hurdles contingent and 1600-meter relay crew...currently owns Central Section top times in 110-hurdles (14.81) and 300-hurdles (38.89).
- Clarence Williams
Bakersfield, Calif...Centennial HS
...decathlete...named Most Outstanding Field Performer at Kern Relays when he won gold in the pole vault with a PR and stadium-record 14-8...named Athlete of the Month for March 2004 by the Bakersfield Jockey Club...top marks include 41.8 (300-meter hurdles) and 14.95 (110-meter hurdles).
- David "DJ" Haynes
Fresno, Calif...Edison HS
...throws...leads the Central Section in the discus with a toss of 171-2...has all but locked up a berth in the state meet...according to associate head coach Chris Campbell: "he has the ability to develop into a competitive performer in both the javelin and the hammer".
- Aspen Marshall
Sacramento, Calif...Sacramento City JC
...throws...projected to fill a void in hammer throw...listed as one of the top throwers in the California junior college ranks...described by Campbell as a "workhorse athlete and a solid all-around competitor".
Next up for Fresno State will be an appearance at the annual Modesto Relays competition, which is scheduled for Saturday morning. The event serves as a final tune-up before the WAC Outdoor Championships get underway next weekend in Houston, Texas.
