9/19/2004 12:00:00 AM | Football
Sept. 19, 2004
- Tonight's win improved Fresno State to 7-1 under Pat Hill in season opener. The lone opener the Bulldogs have lost under Hill came to Nevada in 1998.
- Under Pat Hill, Fresno State is now 35-6 at Bulldog Stadium and 44-5 when leading at the half.
- Wendell Mathis' touchdown runs were the first and second of his Fresno State career. The UCLA transfer finished with 123 yards on 15 carries.
- Fresno State's opening drive spanned 11 plays and 80 yards. Each play on the drive was a run. In fact, the Bulldogs' first 13 plays were runs.
- Marcus McCauley's second quarter interception return for a TD was the team's fourth defensive touchdown of the year and third INT return for a score. The Bulldogs now have a WAC-high eight interceptions in 2004.
- Fresno State's eight interceptions in the last three games are the most in a three-game span since the final three contests of 2001.
- The attendance of 42,662 was the second-largest total in stadium history. In 2001, five Fresno State games featured crowds of 42,881.
- The crowd was also the largest in a WAC home game in 2004.
- Bryson Sumlin finished with 26 carries for 127 yards, his first 100-yard game of his career. Both Sumlin and Mathis eclipsed 100 yards tonight to become the first Bulldog duo to accomplish that in the same game since Michael Gray (129) and Michael Pittman (108) pulled it off against Hawaii on Sept. 28, 1996.
- Therrian Fontenot's interception was the second of his career and first of the season.
- Fresno State has now won 15 consecutive non-televised games and 12 in a row against non-Division I-A opponents.
- The Bulldogs' three interceptions returned for TDs is already the second-highest total of the Pat Hill Era. The most is four in 2002.
- Fresno State had 405 yards of total offense for the second game in a row (Kansas State: 400). The last time the Bulldogs went for at least 400 in back-to-back games came in 2002 (SMU, Boise State).
- The Bulldogs' 263 rushing yards was the most since they had 299 last year against Louisiana Tech.
- Fresno State is now 3-0 for the first time since 2001 and only the third time since 1991.
- Garrett McIntyre's sack to end the game was his second of the year and 13th of his career. He needs only two more to break into Fresno State's career top 10 list.
