FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State men's golf coach Mike Watney has announced the signings of Matt Shaw, Danny Hoffenberg and Todd Angel to national letters of intent to begin playing for the Bulldogs in the fall of 2005.
Shaw, a senior at Clovis High School, was the lone male golfer from the Valley to qualify for the 2004 High School State Championships, earning All-State honors after shooting a 68 for second place. The three-time all-conference, all-valley and Player of the Year won the 2004 California State Junior Amateur Championship after carding 67-71-67 for an 11-under total of 205.
"Matt is a tremendous athlete who hits the ball a mile," Watney said. "He is solid in every phase of the game."
Angel, also a senior at Clovis High School, represented the United States in matches at the prestigious St. Andrews golf course in Scotland and shot a 64 in last year's Len Ross Fresno City Junior tournament.
"Todd reminds me of former Bulldog and All-American Nick Watney," Watney said. "He is tall and slender with broad shoulders and hits the ball a ton, exactly like Nick when he first arrived at Fresno State."
Both Angel and Shaw have the same swing coach, River Park Golf Center's Chris Doos. Doos, a member of the European PGA/Netherlands PGA professional circuit, was recently named one of the Top 50 Golf Instructors by Golf Range Magazine.
Hoffenberg, a senior at Royal High School in Simi Valley, Calif., is a two-time Ventura County Player of the Year and was a CIF first-team all-section member and MVP of the Marmonte League. He has numerous junior tournament titles to his credit, including an impressive AJGA championship in Texas after he birdied the last hole, in addition to winning the 2003 Marmonte League Championship after carding a score of 71-70-73-67.
"Danny hits every shot on the button," Watney said. "He hits almost every fairway and green and is an excellent putter. He beats other players with his consistency."
Watney expects that Shaw, Angel and Hoffenberg, along with current redshirt freshman Brian Ward, will be All-America candidates while playing for Fresno State.
"If that happens," he said, "they will propel the Bulldogs back into the top-ten or possibly the top-five in the nation."
