Cech Named WAC Men's Tennis Player of the Week

DENVER - Fresno State sophomore Jakub Cech has been named the Western Athletic Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Week. It is the first player of the week honor of Cech's career.
Cech, a sophomore from, Prague, Czech Republic, won twice in both singles and doubles to lead Fresno State to victories over Loyola Marymount (5-2) and UC Davis (6-1). The sophomore started by teaming with Sergiu Modoc at No. 1 doubles to post a 9-8 (5) win over Matt Phillips and Michael Wojnarowicz. He followed that up with a 6-4, 3-6, (10-8) victory over Michael Wojnarowicz of LMU at No. 2 singles.
Against UC Davis in the second dual of the day, Cech cruised to a 6-3, 6-3 win over Michael Chin at No. 1 singles. This year, Cech is a perfect 4-0 in singles and 3-0 in doubles. He led Fresno State with 15 dual match victories a season ago.
OTHERS NOMINATED - Rice's Robert Searle was one of two Owls to post singles wins against Nebraska. He defeated the Huskers' Jerry Posch in straight sets 6-1, 6-0. He helped the Owls claim the doubles point against Nebraska, teaming with Ben Harknett for the 8-2 win over NU's Joerg Barthel and Jose Rivera ... SMU's David Kuezer improved his overall singles record to 6-0 over the weekend with a singles win at No. 6 over Luis Daiz Barrigan of Texas 6-7, 6-3, 7-6. In doubles, he and partner Gwinyai Chingoka downed Chodkiewicz and Deussner 8-6 to clinch the doubles point for SMU ... In singles action, Tulsa's Ricardo Soriano is undefeated this spring. He is 7-0 for the Golden Hurricane, including a 4-0 record in the No. 3 position. This past weekend he defeated Bruno Alcala of Arizona, 7-6 (4), 6-3. His win helped TU stay close with the #26-ranked Wildcats.
