Cech Wins, Advances to Quarterfinals

FRESNO, Calif. - Junior Jakub Cech has reached the quarterfinals of the Wilson/ITA Men's Northwest Regional with two victories Saturday in Santa Clara, Calif. The junior from Prague, Czech Republic, was solid in both outings to earn a face-off with Alex Slovic of Washington. The finalists and doubles winner of the regional finals will automatically qualify for the Indoor Championships Nov. 3-6 in Columbus, Ohio.
"Jakub is playing really well right now," said head coach Jay Udwadia. "He's taking control of the matches and finishing off his points. He looks sharp and has a good frame of mind."
Senior Sergiu Modoc also played well today, although losing in the round of 16. Modoc first topped Eric McKean of Stanford, then fell to Slovic 6-1, 7-6.
Modoc and junior Charles Irie advanced in the doubles draw earning a victory over Warrick Foy and Juraid Hossain of Sacramento State. Cech and sophomore Sam Tadevosian fell to Klaus Jank and Andy Kuharsky of Washington in their doubles match.
