FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State's 30-under-par total would normally be good enough to win most tournaments. Not this week. No. 9 BYU won the Barona Collegiate Cup for the second year in a row. Fresno State shot rounds of 274-285-275 to finish in second place with an 834 (-30) total, 12 strokes behind BYU (822). No. 19 Louisville placed third with 837 and 12th-ranked San Diego State came in fourth with 838.
This tournament was very important for the `Dogs because of the strength of the regional field. Head coach Mike Watney was very satisfied with the final results.
"You've got to be happy when you beat good teams in our [Southwest] region such as San Diego State, Denver, Nevada, and Colorado State," he said.
The tournament experienced an unusual stoppage of play in the second round when fog rolled in at 3:30 p.m. on Monday, forcing the teams to play 27 holes on the final day.
"The fog delay might have helped us," Watney said. "After shooting 14-under-par the first round, the second round was not going so well as the fog rolled in. When we came back in the morning, it was all positive for the guys. Jon Rosa birdied five of six holes to finish his round with a 68. Everyone else played the finishing holes at par or better."
The last round may have been the best round of the fall considering the circumstances, Watney said. The final round scores were 68-68-69-70-71.
"NCAA head-to-heads are very important. The guys knew what was on the line and everyone played solid in that last round. Even Ryan McDonald, despite his broken thumb, shot a 68," Watney said.
The best Bulldog was Jason Anthony but he got great support as all five starters shot under par for the tournament. Jason Anthony (66-72-69) secured an 11th-place finish after shooting a final-round 69 for an overall score of 207 (-9). Jon Rosa (70-68-71) and Matt Shaw (69-72-68) tied for 17th with 209 (-7) totals. Mark Modglin shot rounds of 69-73-70 to finish 31st with 212 (-4), and Ryan McDonald (73-74-68) placed 46th with 215 (-1).
Gunnar Avinelis (75-73-74 - 222 at +6) placed 79th, and Nick McClintock (81-73-78) finished 90th with 232. Both Avinelis and McClintock were playing as individuals in the tournament.
Fresno State has now acquired its third-straight top-five finish. This tournament marks the final competition of the team's fall season.
"After a slow start to the season, we came on strong. The improvement was incredible," Watney said. "Jon Rosa stepped up his game and averaged 71.07 including an impressive win at Cal's tournament. Jason Anthony and Mark Modglin both played solid, averaging in the 72s. Matt Shaw was very impressive as a freshman starter averaging 73.8. He can really play, and has impressed the seniors as a result. I can't wait until the spring gets going. The schedule is great. The competition will be tough but we'll be ready."
Fresno State returns to action Feb. 8-10, when it participates in the Waikoloa Intercollegiate in Hawaii.
