FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State head coach Becky Malmo will take a full squad to the Cal Poly Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 29. The Bulldogs are competing in their third show of the fall schedule.
Dogs Head to Cal Poly
Fresno State returns to action this week at the Cal Poly Invitational. Nine schools will be competing in both English and Western disciplines. Fresno State is a favorite in both, but Malmo expects the UC Davis English squad and the Cap Poly Western teams to perform well. There will be 18 Bulldogs riding in this weekend's show.
Dogs Back To Action After a Week Off
Fresno State opened the fall schedule with a tough show at the University of Georgia and competed at the UC Davis English Show before taking a week off. During the off week, head coach Becky Malmo worked with her team in a variety of disciplines. "We had a good week off and had a chance to work on some things," Malmo said. "Everything is coming along well. We are going to move some people around into different spots this weekend and I'm anxious to see how we do."
Full Fall Schedule
The Bulldogs are in the midst of a busy portion of the schedule with six events before Thanksgiving. After this week's show at Cal Poly, Fresno State will compete at events at Stanford, Cal Poly, Stanford and College of the Sequoias before hosting their first home meet of 2005, Nov. 19, at the Student Horse Center.
Dogs Finish Strong at 2005 IHSA National Championships
The Bulldog Western team placed third overall and the English squad was 10th at the 2005 IHSA National Championship in Sunbury, Ohio. Fresno State was seven points from winning the national championship, won by Findlay University with 24 points. Texas A&M placed second with 21 and the Bulldogs had 17. It marked the second time in two years that Fresno State placed in the top three in the Western division at the national championship show. Leading the way for Fresno State was Kayla Merritt, who claimed a pair of national championships, winning the Intermediate Western Horsemanship and Novice Western Horsemanship. Heather Billings won the national championship in the team Beginning Western Horsemanship class. Elizabeth Knapp, a senior from Durham, Calif., was third in Opening Reining and sixth in Open Western Horsemanship. Several other Bulldogs also performed well, including sophomore Sierra Daniels, who was fourth in the team Intermediate Western Horsemanship, and Kristin Marchesi, fourth in Advanced Western Horsemanship.
Bulldogs Win 2005 Zone Champions
The Bulldog Equestrian team swept the competition by winning the English and Western team competition at the IHSA Zone 8 Championships in Ridgeway, Ore. It was the second straight year the Bulldogs won the zone title.
