Fresno State Advances Three in Men's Bulldog Classic

FRESNO, Calif. - Three Bulldogs advanced to the second round of the Bulldog Classic with victories Friday at the Wathen Tennis Center. In the 12th annual Bulldog Classic, junior Charles Irie led the way defeating Andy Kuharszky of Washington in two sets, 6-3, 6-1.
"Charlie looked really sharp today," said head coach Jay Udwadia. "He hit the ball cleanly, made few errors and had a lot of energy."
Junior Jakub Cech and Senior Sergiu Modoc, two of the top four seeds in the tournament, also won their opening round matches. However, the two veterans had a rougher road to victory. Cech was down early in the match, dropping the first set 2-6. But he bounced back winning the second and third sets 6-4 and 6-3, respectively.
Modoc also trailed early, losing the first set 6-7 (3). In the final two sets he was much more polished, winning easily 6-3, 6-1.
"These were their first matches of the Fall, so they had to work some things out," said Udwadia. "But I liked the way Sergiu and Jakub stayed tough and came back to win."
Sophomore Sam Tadevosian lost his first round match in the Flight B bracket 7-6 (3), 6-4, to Mike Ricks of Washington.
Tomorrow's matches begin at 9 am for both Flight A and B singles at the Wathen Tennis Center.
