Bulldog Basketball Teams Open Season With Red/White Scrimmage

FRESNO, Calif.- The Fresno State men's and women's basketball teams entertained fans on Wednesday night during the Red/White scrimmage, officially signaling the start of the 2005-06 campaign.
In addition to scrimmages for both teams, fans witnessed a co-ed two-ball contest and slam dunk contest. After player introductions, head coaches Steve Cleveland and Adrian Wiggins addressed the crowd and gave a brief outlook on their team.
Donovan Morris and Toni Atherley (105 points) captured the victory over Ja'Vance Coleman and Chantella Perera (75 points). With the Morris/Atherley victory, Bulldog fan William Armstrong was awarded a MP3 player.
After the two-ball competition, four members of the men's squad entertained the crowd with a dunk contest. Coleman, Quinton Hosley, Dominic McGuire and Morris were among those to showcase their dunking skills.
The women's team then took the floor for their scrimmage. Red team starters included Toni Atherley, Paige Diggs, Amy Parrish, Chantella Perera and Jasmine Plummer. The white team's starting five consisted of Andrea Roberson, Mirenda Swearengin, Jenny Thipgin, Kendra Walker-Roche and Tierre Wilson. The reserves got the upper hand, with the white team winning 33-25.
Following the women's scrimmage, the men took the court and played two 15-minute games. In the first contest, the white team prevailed 30-21 behind Dwight O' Neil's 16 points. Starters for the red team included: Kevin Bell, Renato Cesar, Coleman (12 points), Hosley and Morris. The white team was led by Hector Hernandez, McGuire, Dekyron Nicks, O'Neil and Ajay Ridings.
The second contest was won by the white team, 26-25. Red team starters were: Coleman, Hernandez, Hosley (game-best 15 points), Nicks, O'Neil. The white squad was led by: Bell, Cesar (team-high eight points), Jeff Jackson, McGuire and Morris.
The Fresno State women open their exhibition season on Monday, Nov. 7, against crosstown rival Fresno Pacific at 7 p.m. The men's first exhibition takes place Wednesday, Nov. 9, against Master's College at 7 p.m.
