MEMPHIS - For senior Garrett McIntyre, going to bowl games has become an annual routine, but for him there is something special about the 47th Annual AutoZone Liberty. It's the city of Memphis.
"The people of Memphis have been so nice and the downtown area with Beale Street and everything has been awesome," McIntyre said. "This has been the best bowl experience we have had by far."
McIntyre, the 2005 WAC Defensive Player of the Year, was recognized at halftime of the Memphis vs. Gonzaga basketball game on Tuesday night, which was live on ESPN2. Head coach Pat Hill was also honored.
The Fresno State players and official traveling party are staying at the historic Peabody Hotel. They have experienced the special night life of Beale Street and the famous southern hospitality, music and cuisine, including Memphis ribs.
"The Peabody is great and the whole atmosphere here as been a lot of fun," said quarterback Paul Pinegar. "This has been the best bowl experience we've had."
While the Bulldogs are enjoying the sights and sounds of Memphis, the bowl game is on their minds.
The Bulldogs practiced Wednesday at the Liberty Bowl, which was freshly painted in preparation for the game. Bowl officials are expecting approximately 55,000 fans for the game.
"We have to win this game and finish strong," said McIntyre. "As a senior class, we want to win four straight bowl games and do something special. We will be ready to play a tough, physical game and get back to Bulldog football."
The Bulldogs will attend an awards luncheon on Thursday, where the postseason award winners from Tulsa and Fresno State will be honored. Other activities include a Fresno State fan welcome at the Memphis Convention Center Thursday evening, a professional rodeo and the Liberty Bowl Parade on Beale Street Friday afternoon.
The 47th Annual AutoZone Liberty Bowl will be on live on ESPN at 10 a.m. PT on Dec. 31.
