Fresno State Avoids Rain to Sweep Sacramento State 6-0

FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State men's tennis team dodged the raindrops long enough Wednesday to post a 6-0 victory over Sacramento State at the Wathen Tennis Center.
The victory was the 19th in a row at home for the 55th-ranked Bulldogs (6-1), including a 6-0 mark this year. It also precedes a key road trip that sees Fresno State play at No. 48 San Diego on Sunday and then at San Diego State on Monday.
"With all the rain we've been having lately, I was very happy to see us play so well," head coach Jay Udwadia said. "We really showed some improvement today, and that is a good sign heading into the upcoming road trip against two very solid teams.
With the loss, Sacramento State (1-2) fell to 0-7 all-time against the Bulldogs.
Because the possibility of inclement weather -- rain fell in Fresno until about 1 p.m. -- singles was played first. And the Bulldogs proceeded to win five of six matches in straight sets.
Leading the charge yet again was Jakub Cech, for whom easy matches are becoming the norm. The sophomore improved to 7-0 in singles duals with a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Matt Jones at No. 1. In his seven spring victories, Cech has dropped only two sets, though today was just his second match of the spring at the No. 1 spot.
"Jakub is really playing good tennis right now," Udwadia said. "He took on a very good player today and really didn't have much trouble. I think that speaks volumes for how well he's playing and how confident he is in his game."
Also winning in straight sets were Sergiu Modoc, Charles Irie, Nicolas Mascheroni and Sam Gibbs. Andy Sinn posted his second consecutive three-set win.
Next up for the Bulldogs is a match at San Diego. The two teams face off Sunday at 12:30 p.m.
