What's Coming Up
Fresno State (1-1) heads out on the road for a busy week. The team begins play Tuesday with a match at No. 1 Stanford at 1:30 p.m. at the Taube Family Tennis Center. Then beginning Friday, the 21st-ranked Bulldogs play in the UNLV Invitational. In the first round, Fresno State will take on Oklahoma State at 2 p.m. The Bulldogs are the defending champions of the event.
What Happened Recently
For the second time this year, Fresno State had a match halted by rain. This time it was Saturday's contest against No. 51 San Diego that was postponed. With rain forecasted throughout the weekend, the Toreros elected not to make the trip to Fresno. Unfortunately, the rains never really materialized, and the match could have been played. There is no scheduled make-up date for the match. The Bulldogs also had their match with UC Irvine postponed by rain on Feb. 11.
Two New Bulldogs Highlight Lineup
With the departure of Vlatka Jovanovic (transferred) and Jelena Pandzic (ruled ineligible), two freshmen grace the Fresno State lineup this year. Jacqui Haskett and Masiyazi Fadzai come from two different continents to the Bulldogs and currently occupy the bottom two spots in the singles lineup as well as comprise the No. 3 doubles team. Haskett, who played some in the fall while battling some injuries, hails from Adelaide, Australia, and is 1-1 thus far in singles duals. Fadzai is from Harare, Zimbabwe, and joined the team in January. She sat out the first dual match against Santa Clara while waiting to be declared eligible and played No. 6 against UCLA on Saturday.
Not Much Action Yet
Despite moving into the middle of February this week, Fresno State has only played two matches thus far in 2005. The Bulldogs opened play Jan. 22 with a 6-1 victory over Santa Clara. They then didn't have another scheduled match until Feb. 11 at UC Irvine, a contest that was cancelled by rain. Showing some signs of rust, Fresno State finally took the court again Saturday and fell to No. 11 UCLA, 7-0. The reason for the lengthy layoff is because a hole was left in the schedule due to Fresno State's expected participation in the National Team Indoors on Feb. 3-6. But the Bulldogs were not selected for the event, meaning the team was forced to go nearly three weeks without playing a dual match. But things get busy next week when Fresno State plays four matches, all away from home.
