FRESNO, Calif. - Seventh-ranked Stanford remained perfect all-time against Fresno State by handing the Bulldogs a 5-2 loss on Saturday afternoon at the Taube Family Tennis Center.
The Cardinal (4-0) are now 12-0 all-time against Fresno State, with 11 of those meetings coming in Palo Alto. The loss snapped a four-match winning streak for the 58th-ranked Bulldogs (4-1), who were playing their first road match of the season.
Things started well for Stanford, which swept the doubles to jump ahead 1-0. But Fresno State had two bright spots in singles. At No. 3, Jakub Cech improved to 5-0 in singles dual matches with a 6-3, 6-2 drubbing of James Wan. Cech is now 8-3 on the year and leads the team in singles victories.
Also victorious was Nicolas Mascheroni, who picked up his biggest win since joining the team in January by taking out Eric McKean at No. 6 by scores of 4-6, 6-3, (11-9). McKean entered 3-0 in singles dual matches.
Only one other match went to three sets, that being at No. 4 where Andy Sinn fell to Phil Sheng 4-6, 6-3 (10-6).
Fresno State returns to action Friday with a match against Sacramento State at 2 p.m. at the Wathen Tennis Center.
