Friday-Sunday, March 4-6 -- La Jolla, Calif.
What's Coming Up
Fresno State takes a break from dual match action this week to participate in the Pacific Coast Doubles Tournament in La Jolla, Calif. The competition runs Friday through Sunday.
What Just Happened
Fresno State split a pair of home matches last week, moving the team's record to 7-2 on the year. On Friday, the Bulldogs defeated Santa Clara 4-3 before dropping a 4-3 decision to No. 33 Rice on Sunday. The loss to the Owls snapped Fresno State's 20-match home court win streak. Andy Sinn won both of singles matches over the weekend, including an upset of 95th-ranked Ralph Knupfer of Rice by scores of 5-7, 7-6 (10), 6-0. Sinn, who has now won four matches in a row, saved four match points in the victory.
Home Winning Streak Halted at 20
Fresno State moved its win streak at the Wathen Tennis Center to 20 with a victory over Santa Clara on Friday. But Sunday's 4-3 loss to 33rd-ranked Rice brought an end to the win streak that began after the Bulldogs lost to Pepperdine in April 2003. Despite the defeat, Fresno State has gone 75-9 (.893) since the dedication of the Wathen Center in January 1998. Since the 2003 season, the Bulldogs are 28-2 at home.
Sinn-fully Good
Andy Sinn has greatly improved his level of play and is riding one of the better streaks of his career. The senior has won four matches in a row and picked up one of the best victories of his career Sunday against Rice when he upset No. 95-ranked Ralph Knupfer 5-7, 7-6 (10), 6-0. Sinn saved four match points in the second-set tiebreaker before cruising in the third. He is now 9-5 (6-3 dual) on the season in singles and has combined with Sam Gibbs to go 5-2 at the No. 3 doubles spot.
Cech Suffers First Loss
After opening the dual match season with eight victories in a row, Jakub Cech finally tasted defeat for the first time when he fell 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 to 45th-ranked Robert Searle of Rice. Nonetheless, Cech has had a scintillating start to this spring. He leads the team with 11 singles victories and has gone 8-1 in dual matches. Lately, he has anchored the top of the Fresno State lineup from the No. 1 spot.
