FRESNO, Calif. - Boise State won the doubles point and then claimed four singles matches to post a 5-2 victory over Fresno State in the regular season finale for both teams on Saturday afternoon at the Appleton Tennis Center in Boise, Idaho.
The loss means the Bulldogs (10-10) finished the regular season winless in their four true road matches. Fresno State was also 1-2 in neutral-site contests.
The match was the final tune-up for both teams before next week's WAC Tournament, which begins Thursday in Honolulu. The Bulldogs will be gunning for their first league title since 1999.
Against the 32nd-ranked Broncos (27-7), Fresno State picked up its only two points of the day at Nos. 3 and 4 singles, where Charles Irie and Andy Sinn both posted wins. At No. 4, Sinn picked up his 14th win of the year with a 7-5, 6-3 decision over Ikaika Jobe.
Irie's victory took a bit longer. In the final match of the dual to finish, Irie defeated Matias Silva 3-6, 7-6 (5), (10-8).
"I thought we fought pretty hard up and down the lineup today," first-year head coach Jay Udwadia said. "Especially at home, Boise State is a very tough team, and they were just a little better than us today. But we'll return home for a few solid days of practice and hopefully we'll be able to turn it around for next week's WAC Tournament."
Fresno State figures to be the fifth seed at the league championships. At No. 61, the Bulldogs are the fifth-highest ranked team in the WAC behind Boise State (32nd), Rice (33rd), SMU (46th) and Tulsa (47th).
Fresno State has bowed out in the first round of the WAC Tournament in two of the last three years.
