FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State heads to Honolulu this week for the WAC Tournament, hosted by the University of Hawaii. The Bulldogs (10-10) will be the fifth-seeded team and begin play Friday against fourth-seeded Tulsa at noon PT (9 a.m. HT). It will be the second meeting between the two teams this year, the other coming March 11 at the Blue-Gray Classic in Montgomery, Ala., a 4-2 victory for the Golden Hurricane. Fresno State is in search of its first WAC Tournament title since 1999.
Fresno State enters this week's WAC Tournament not having won the title since 1999, the team's longest draught since joining the conference in the 1992-93 season. The Bulldogs have won the tournament twice (1996 and '99) and have been the runner-up on three other occasions (1993, '95 and '01). In two of the last three years, Fresno State has dropped its opening round match, including a first-round loss to Tulsa last year. The Bulldogs own an 18-10 all-time record in WAC Tournament matches, although they've lost four of their last five dating back to the 2001 championship match.
Fresno State played three WAC teams this year, losing to each. On Feb. 27, the Bulldogs lost at home to Rice by a score of 4-3. At the Blue-Gray Classic in Montgomery, Ala., on March 11, Fresno State suffered a 4-2 setback to Tulsa, which will play Fresno State in the WAC Tournament first round on Friday. Then last week, Boise State played a rude host in a 5-2 victory over the Bulldogs. Fresno State has lost six of its last seven matches against league opposition.
