Bulldog Update
The Cal-Nevada Championships arrive at Fresno State later this weekend, as athletes from schools throughout California and Nevada will compete at Warmerdam Field. A total of 23 schools are competing in the two-day event, which kicks off on Friday, Apr. 22, with the women's hammer throw at 8 a.m. Preliminaries are scheduled for Friday, with event finals taking place Saturday. Fresno State will be hosting the event for the first time since 2002.
MEN'S TEAM
A Look Back: Fresno State at the 2004 Cal-Nevada Championships
Fresno State placed sixth overall at the 2004 Cal-Nevada Championships in San Luis Obispo, Calif., earning 49 points. The Bulldogs, who only participated in the second day of competition after hosting the Fresno Relays on Saturday, were paced by field-events specialist Joe Vasquez. Cal State Northridge won the men's title with 127 points, six and one half points ahead of host Cal Poly in second (120.5). Vasquez registered Fresno State's only first-place finish, leading all entrants in the discus with a personal-best mark of 173-9 (52.95m). He also took second place in the hammer with a personal-best throw of 202-1 (61.60m). Russell Weaver was one of four Bulldogs to place in the top-10 of the pole vault, leading the group at 16-8.75 (5.10m). Both men's relay squads performed well: the 4x100-meter team took fourth with a 42.55 and the 4x400-meter crew finished third at 3:15.72.
Berrian Qualifies For NCAA Regionals At Mt. SAC Relays
Fresno State track and field closed out a successful showing at the Mt. San Antonio College Relays over the weekend. Chris Berrian added his name to Fresno State's arsenal of NCAA Regional entrants, running a personal-best 20.89 in the 200-meter dash to finish sixth overall and first in his section. Berrian's time also currently ranks as the fifth-best finish in the 200-meter dash in Fresno State history. Other highlights on the men's side included:
- D.J. Haynes recording a first-place finish in the shot put with a career-best 52-5.50 (15.99m).
- Russell Weaver reached a personal-best 17-6.50 in the pole vault. He has already qualified for NCAA Regionals.
- The Bulldog's 4x100-meter relay team of Alex Jones, Jesse Smith, Berrian and Rico Morales was second with a time of 40.90. The 4x400-meter relay squad of Morales, Juan Valdez, Kenny Moon and Ryan Moore was fourth at 3:11.99.
Moore's 400-m Hurdle Finish Highlights Brutus Hamilton Invitational
Fresno State closed out competition at the Brutus Hamilton Invitational on Apr. 9 in Berkeley, Calif. Ryan Moore, who is one of three NCAA Regional qualifiers on the men's side, took first place in the 400-meter hurdle competition with a personal-best 51.30. Sean Marzolf was third in the 800-meter run, clocking in at 1:52.57. Last weekend, Marzolf ran a season-best 1:51.48 and his personal-best is 1:51.02. Ian Mason ran a career-best 14:52.58 in the 5000-meter run, wrapping up the event in sixth place overall.
WOMEN'S TEAM
A Look Back: Fresno State at the 2004 Cal-Nevada Championships
Fresno State placed sixth overall at the 2004 Cal-Nevada Championships in San Luis Obispo, Calif., earning 55 points. San Diego State won the women's crown with 167 points followed by Cal State Northridge with 119 points. Kara June was Fresno State's top performer, taking second in two different events. She clocked in with a career-best 9:47.47 in the 3000-meter run and was the runner-up in the 5000-meter run, recording a personal-best 17:34.20. Andrea Buckner placed fifth in the 5000-meter run and sixth in the 3000-meter run. Mallory Webb was third in the javelin with a toss of 151-8 (46.06m). Katie Richardson improved on her personal-best mark with a 164-8 (50.20m) performance to finish fifth in the discus. In the same event, La'Sha Hill set a new career-high with a toss of 149-2 (45.48m) to take ninth.
Malaythong, Hill Qualify For NCAA Regionals At Mt. SAC Relays
Fresno State track and field closed out a successful showing at the Mt. San Antonio College Relays over the weekend. Annie Malaythong and La'Sha Hill notched NCAA Regional qualifying marks during Friday's competition. Malaythong joined Lexine Lesser as Bulldog qualifiers in the pole vault, as Malaythong took second with a season-high mark of 12-5.50 (3.80m) in the 15-participant event. Hill also recorded a runner-up finish, throwing a personal-best distance of 158-2 (48.21m) in the discus to become Fresno State's sixth NCAA Regional qualifier on the women's side this year. Also during the weekend:
- Lexine Lesser improved her NCAA Regional standing, reaching a season-best 12-11.50 (3.95m) in the pole vault to take second overall.
- Katie Richardson continues to inch closer to an NCAA Regional berth in the discus. She was fourth overall with a season-high mark of 154-10 (47.20m).
Brutus Hamilton Invitational Recap
Fresno State closed out competition at the Brutus Hamilton Invitational on Apr. 9 in Berkeley, Calif. Among the highlights: Lexine Lesser finishing fourth overall in the pole vault, reaching 12-5.50 (3.80m). That exact mark stands as the NCAA Regional qualifying standard, which she has already exceeded twice this year at 12-6 (3.81m). Mallory Webb taking fifth in the javelin with a distance of 152-11 (46.60m). She has also already qualified for NCAA Regionals. Andrea Buckner finished third in the 3000-meter steeplechase, an event in which she has already qualified for NCAA Regional competition. She ran a personal-best 10:46.76, shaving more than a second off her previous best. Regina Ollison took seventh in the triple jump, leaping to 38-7 (11.76m).
Lopez, Christianson Shine At Fresno Relays
Of Fresno State's 16 first-place finishes on the afternoon, 12 of those came on the women's side. Christina Lopez led the field in the 100-and 200-meter runs and Katie Christianson was also a multiple-event winner (100-meter hurdles and long jump). Mallory Webb threw a 144-0 (43.90m) to win the javelin. Renee Winston (400-meters), Zinzi Evans (800-meters) and Regina Ollison (triple jump) all recorded season-bests on their way to first-place finishes.
