FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State women's golf team held its first postseason awards banquet Sunday night at Pardini's Restaurant. The team was honored for its success and five individuals received awards.
Marissa Patterson, a redshirt freshman, was named the Most Improved Player for the hard work she put in during the year improving her golf swing.
The Top Dog Award, given to the Bulldog with the highest GPA on the team, went to junior Meggie Fagundes.
"Meggie exemplifies what it means to be a student-athlete," head coach Angie Cates said. "She is one of our top players and is very involved with the community."
Junior Adrianna Chico, whose score was counted 29 out of 31 times and traveled to every tournament, was named Most Consistent.
"I always knew we could count on her to put up a good number," Cates said.
Cates gave senior Holly Cornell the Bulldog Award, reserved for the player who has the best attitude.
Freshman Laura Luethke was named the team's Most Valuable Player. Luethke was ranked in the top five in the Western region for most of the year. She ended the year ranked No. 5 in the region, No. 7 in the country, and nearly missed out on an NCAA Championships bid after falling in a play-off at NCAA Regionals.
"Laura set the bar very high right out of the blocks," Cates said. "She opened our debut season with a 68 and closed with another 68. She led the country with 91 birdies before making a few more at the NCAA Regional, and was No. 2 in the country for putts per round with 29."
