Bulldog Update
Fresno State travels north this weekend for an appearance at the Modesto Relays. Competition begins early Saturday morning and continues throughout the day. The Bulldogs are coming off successful back-to-back weekends in which they participated in team-scoring meets. The Modesto Relays will also serve as a tune-up for next week's WAC Outdoor Championships.
MEN'S TEAM
`Dogs Impressive At Cal Poly Meet
Fresno State completed a sweep in a five-way meet in San Luis Obispo last weekend, finishing 4-0 against host Cal Poly, Cal State Northridge, Sacramento State and UC Santa Barbara. The men totaled six first-place finishes. Chris Berrian ran a 10.27 in the 100-meters, qualifying him for NCAA Regionals. Also in a wind-aided 200-meters, Berrian crossed the line at 20.47 which would stand as Fresno State's best time in school history. Also, Leif McMurry qualified for NCAA Regionals as he finished second in the pole vault at 16-6.75 (5.05m).
Bulldogs Finish Second At Cal-Nevada Championships
Fresno State enjoyed a successful showing at the Cal-Nevada Championships, tallying 146.5 points for a runner-up finish behind champion Cal State Northridge at 157 points. Chris Berrian was selected Outstanding Track Performer for the two-day event after claiming titles in the 100- and 200-meter races. Berrian also ran the third leg of the first-place 4x100-meter relay squad, which clocked in at 40.41 to qualify for NCAA Regionals.
Chris Berrian Named WAC Athlete of the Week
Along with Fresno State's success at the Cal-Nevada Championships came another honor, as senior sprinter Chris Berrian was named WAC Athlete of the Week for Apr. 18-24. Berrian is the first Bulldog athlete to earn the honor this season and becomes the first Fresno State track and field athlete to be selected since Apr. 1, 2002 (Crystal Simmons).
WOMEN'S TEAM
`Dogs Impressive At Cal Poly Meet
Fresno State completed a sweep in a five-way meet in San Luis Obispo last weekend, finishing 4-0 against host Cal Poly, Cal State Northridge, Sacramento State and UC Santa Barbara. The women registered three first-place finishes. Andrea Buckner ran a 10:01.55 to lead the field in the 3000-meter run, Zinzi Evans captured the title in the 800-meters, crossing the line at 2:12.39 and Mallory Webb took first in the javelin, as she threw a distance of 151-0 (46.05m).
Bulldogs Crowned Cal-Nevada Champions
Fresno State registered 125.5 points, edging out Cal State Northridge and UNLV (both at 123) for the team title at the 2005 Cal-Nevada Championships. The Bulldogs recorded only four first-place finishes in the competition but displayed their depth as multiple athletes were contributing scorers in almost every event. Andrea Buckner earned first-place honors in the 3000-meter steeplechase (10:39.21) and 5000-meters (17:20.49). Zinzi Evans ran a 2:10.14 in the 800-meters to claim the crown in that race while Katie Christianson leaped to 19-3.50 (5.88m) in the long jump to capture the title. Lexine Lesser reached 12-5.50 (3.80m) in the pole vault, good for a second-place finish while Annie Malaythong (11-8/3.56m) tied for fifth.
Newcomers Leading The Field
Fresno State's depth chart is filled with several newcomers who own the top mark in their respective event. Freshman Christina Lopez is the top `Dog in the 200-meter run, while fellow rookies Renee Winston (400-meters) and Erica McCoy (400-meter hurdles) are in the same category. Two junior college transfers- Regina Ollison (triple jump) and Aspen Marshall (shot put)- are leading their events, as is Jamie Farley (hammer). Farley is returning to the Bulldogs for her first full season of competition since 2002 after serving a Mormon mission the last two years.
