FRESNO, Calif.- Fresno State's 2005 soccer recruiting class was recently ranked in the top 25 in the west region by Soccer Buzz Magazine, a national publication covering collegiate soccer.
The Bulldogs were ranked No. 23 in the west region, featuring schools from California, Washington, Oregon, Utah and Nevada among others. The No. 23 ranking is the highest in school history for Fresno State, which was one of three WAC teams (Nevada, Hawai'i) to make the list. The Bulldogs were also ranked among the top-100 in the nation, representing a program first.
"We are excited to be recognized in the top-100 and among the top-25 in a very tough west region," said second-year head coach Steve Springthorpe. "This is another building block for our program as our staff continues to work hard in the area of recruiting."
In February, Springthorpe announced the signing of seven student-athletes to national letters of intent. The 'Dogs also welcome two junior college transfers next year, resulting in the addition of nine newcomers to a roster that already includes 20 returnees.
Included in the class are the following: Emily Brown (Lemoore, Calif.), Evette Flores (Fresno, Calif.), Rosario Marie Foley (San Leandro, Calif.), Selena Gill (Fresno, Calif.), Nicole Gutierrez (Sacramento, Calif.), Allison Schroeder (Fresno, Calif.) and Alison Sill (Castro Valley, Calif.). Angie Larsen (San Jose, Calif.) and Sarah Trigg (Santa Clara, Calif.) arrive as junior college transfers from West Valley College.
All nine newcomers are from California, with four of the freshmen hailing from the Valley. Three of those- Evette Flores, Selena Gill and Allison Schroeder-are from Fresno area high schools. Emily Brown, the fourth Valley product, arrives at Fresno State from Leemore High School.
Last year's Fresno State squad, which featured 11 freshmen among its roster of 23 players, finished 5-9-4 overall and 2-3-3 in the WAC. The Bulldogs also qualified for the WAC Tournament for the 10th straight time in program history (1995-2004).
