FRESNO, Calif. - The loud noise of a recorded crowd blared from the speakers at Bulldog Stadium Saturday night as the Fresno State football team held its third scrimmage of fall camp. The sound, meant to emulate a hostile crowd, greeted the Dogs during each play.
Despite the distraction, senior quarterback Paul Pinegar and the Bulldog offense looked sharp. Pinegar completed his first six pass attempts and near the end of the scrimmage launched a bomb that hit receiver Jermaine Jamison in stride for a 65-yard touchdown. That touchdown pass silenced the fake crowd.
"Paul handled the noise and distraction very well," said head coach Pat Hill. "We only had one false start and one missed play all night. That's pretty good. Paul is really in a great rhythm and is showing great poise and leadership."
The scrimmage, which consisted of several situations, was also the first time the Dogs worked on their gameday routine, include warm-ups, stretching and getting mentally prepared.
Fresno State has two weeks before the season opener against Weber State. Single game tickets for the home opener are still available.
After Saturday's scrimmage, the Bulldogs will get two days off before returning to practice on Tuesday. The team will attend the annual Kickoff Dinner Sunday night at the Fresno Convention Center.
"We got in a lot of good work tonight," Hill said. "The guys are really tired and their legs are dead. Once we get our legs back, we will start looking even better. Overall, we've had a great camp. I can't wait for the season to start. It's been a long time since we walked down that ramp at Bulldog Stadium to a sea of red."
Fresno State is ranked No. 24 in the Associated Press poll, the first time the Dogs have been nationally ranked in the preseason. Other publications have the Bulldogs ranked as high as No. 16.
Season tickets, including student season tickets and several Family Value Plans, are available at the Bulldog Ticket Office, by phone at (559) 278-DOGS or on-line at gobulldogs.com.
