Fresno, Calif. - Day two of the Women's Bulldog Classic is in the books. Two Bulldogs reached the semifinals and consequently they will be playing each other. Seniors Katharina Winterhalter and Lucia Sainz will go head-to-head at about 10:30 am. The two teammates are also doubles partners and will play for the Doubles Championship at 9 am.
Sophomore Jacqui Haskett won her first match of the day, beating Fresno Pacific's Anna Karakaveya 6-4, 1-6, 6-4. Haskett then lost to top seeded Margarita Kharnaukhova of Sacramento State, but put up a good fight. Haskett one the first set 6-2, but dropped the final two sets to the nationally ranked Kharnakova.
"Jacqui played exceptionally well in the first set," said head coach Simon Thibodeau. "She also had some nice serves. But in the second set she had some true pain and had a tiring match earlier in the day."
Freshman Bruna Paes also had a good showing. She defeated third seeded Cecilia Helland of Sacramento State 6-3, 6-1 in the third round. However, she ran into a more experienced teammate Sainz in the quarterfinals, losing 4-6, 3-6.
"Bruna had a very positive weekend," said Thibodeau. "It was her first NCAA tournament and she played well."
Kharnikova and Fresno Pacific's Angelina Minova will play in the other semifinal. The Singles Championship will begin at approximately at 1 pm.
