The Opening Kick-Off

Kick-off is slated for 2 p.m. at Bulldog Stadium, as Fresno State will not play its next home game until Oct. 21 against Louisiana Tech. The `Dogs have won two of their last three games despite a 1-0 overtime setback against Long Beach State in their most recent action on the pitch.
WAC Play Begins Oct. 9
Fresno State's 10th season of WAC competition gets underway Sunday, Oct. 9, at Nevada. The WAC is an eight-team conference this year and features newcomers Idaho (Big West), Louisiana Tech (first year in conference) and Idaho (Big West).
Scouting Cal State Bakersfield
Cal State Bakersfield (3-6-0) is scheduled to play two matches before Sunday's game against Fresno State. The Roadrunners host Cal Poly Pomona on Wednesday, then travel to play at Grand Canyon two days later. CSUB is coming off a 2-0 loss at Chico State over the weekend, dropping their record to 2-0 in conference action. After beginning the year with a 5-0 shutout of Masters College, CSUB suffered a three-game losing streak before getting back on track. Leading the Roadrunners so far this year are: Taylor Skylar (four goals, nine points, 33 shots), Giuiliana Fonseca (three goals, 22 shots, eight points), Jennifer Mettler (team-high three assists) and Ashley Witten (1.73 GAA, 39 saves, one shutout). Head coach Simon Tobin directs the Roadrunners.
Fresno State All-Time vs. Cal State Bakersfield
The schools have played two matches and Fresno State had won both. In the first-ever meeting, the Bulldogs registered a 3-0 shutout on Sept. 9, 1997. One year later, the two clubs squared off again in a significant game in Fresno State soccer history. On Sept. 1, 1998, Fresno State edged Cal State Bakersfield 2-1 in front of a school-record 5,100 fans in the season opener.
Last Week's Action:
Long Beach State 1, Fresno State 0 (Sept. 21, 2005)
Kim Silos' goal with 2:25 remaining in the first overtime period lifted Long Beach State to a 1-0 victory over Fresno State last week at Bulldog Stadium. Silos recorded five of Long Beach State's six shots on the evening and led all players in that category. She broke free in the middle, moved around a defender, took a pass from Dana Farquhar and blasted a shot past Fresno State keeper Angie Larsen for the game-winner. The Bulldogs held an 8-6 edge in shot attempts, including a 3-1 mark in the opening stanza. Senior Kortney Lewis, junior Cortney Sobrero and freshman Alison Sill registered two shots apiece in the loss. Sobrero rocketed two shots that sailed wide, representing Fresno State's best first-half scoring opportunities. In the second half, Silos nearly gave the 49ers a 1-0 lead when she took a cross from Farquhar and fired a shot into the goal. The apparent score was nullified, as an offside call gave possession back to Fresno State, whose best chance in the second half came from an Alison Sill header.
Defending The Home Turf
Fresno State is now 48-30-5 all-time in games played at Bulldog Stadium. The `Dogs went 4-1-2 at home in 2004. Fresno State's eight home victories in 2000 were a program-best, but the best season came in 1997 at 7-3. The Bulldogs have dropped their first three games at home this year. The only other time that happened was in 2002, when Fresno State lost to No. 3 UCLA, No. 4 California and Pacific to begin the season 0-4 at home.
Shots Are There But Percentage Is Not
Fresno State has attempted 108 shots on the year, almost 20 more than their opponents' total of 89. However, the Bulldogs only have eight goals to show for it, translating into a percentage of .074. Conversely, Fresno State's opponents have accumulated a shooting percentage of .180 with 16 goals. Fresno State has tallied 48 shots on goal compared to its opponents' total of 39.
34 The Lucky Number In Vegas
The Bulldogs matched a school-record with 34 shot attempts in a 3-2 win over Sam Houston State on Sept. 18 at the UNLV adidas Classic. Fresno State, which held a 34-10 edge in shot attempts with 18 coming on goal, previously recorded 34 shots during a 7-1 rout of San Jose State back on Oct. 10, 2003. The Bulldog's 18 shots on goal fell one short of the program record of 19, established in the same match back in 2003. There were impressive individual totals as well. Cortney Sobrero recorded a career-high 12 shots (seven on goal), while Kortney Lewis tallied six and Koleen Anderson five.
Second-Half Squad
The majority of Fresno State's offensive production has occurred in the second period of action through the first nine games. The Bulldogs are outshooting their opponents 61-47 in the second half compared to holding a 45-41 edge in the opening period. Five of the Bulldog's eight goals have been scored after halftime and one of the team's scores has come during overtime.
Name Is The Same On Offense
No matter how you spell it, the majority of the offensive production has come from the usual suspects: senior Kortney Lewis and junior Cortney Sobrero. Lewis leads the `Dogs in points with nine, as she has scored three goals and added three assists. Sobrero also has three goals, while leading the team in shots (38) and shots on goal (17). Both players continue to climb in the Bulldog record books as well. Lewis currently ranks second in points (71) and shots (151) and third in goals (27) and assists (17). Sobrero is close behind, ranking sixth in points (40), fourth in goals (16), fifth in shots (132).
Keeper Rotation
Fresno State has alternated keepers through the first nine games, as juniors Jeannette Paine and Angie Larsen have shared time in net. Paine, the Bulldog's starter in each of her first two seasons, sports a 2-3 record after having played 346:29 in goal while making 11 saves. Larsen, who was behind the posts for the Bulldog's only shutout of the year (1-0 at UNLV on Sept. 16) has played 471:50 in net and has made 11 saves. Paine's GAA stands at 2.34 while Larsen checks in at 1.34. Larsen's record stands at 1-3.
