What's Coming Up

What Happened Recently
The Fresno State men's tennis team opened the 2006 dual match season with two impressive victories, Jan. 22 at the Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center. In the first match ever played at the Wathen Tennis Center under the lights, the Bulldogs ended the evening on a high note. Junior Jakub Cech beat 54th ranked John Nguyen of Cal Poly in the third set tie-breaker to cap off an excellent team effort. Fresno State (2-0) began the day by sweeping UC Davis in doubles play, each Bulldog tandem winning 8-5. Senior Sergiu Modoc played in the No. 1 slot of the singles lineup and responded with a two set victory over Jordan Combs. Freshman Jordi Ballester and junior Franz Molina made their Fresno State debuts with victories, helping the Bulldogs defeat Davis 6-1. In the second dual match of the day, Fresno State won convincingly over a stingy Cal Poly Mustangs team (0-1) that made the `Dogs 7-0 victory closer than it seemed. The `Dogs took two of the three doubles matches to earn the doubles point. Then in singles play, Fresno State got off to a quick start with sophomore Sam Tadevosian winning 6-0, 6-1. Ballester then finished his match before junior Charles Irie sealed Fresno State's dual match victory with his straight set win.
Looking Ahead
Following Sunday's dual match versus San Francisco, the Bulldogs will remain at home to host Princeton on Feb. 3 and Santa Clara on Feb. 5. Fresno State is 1-0 all-time against Princeton, earning a 6-1 victory in 2000. Against Santa Clara, the Bulldogs are a perfect 13-0 and will face the Broncos for the fourth consecutive season.
