FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State Men's tennis team has added two more players to its squad for the 2006 season. The Bulldogs already return five letterwinners from last season and welcome four newcomers for this year, the two newest being Jordi Ballester from Spain and Franz Molina from Bolivia.
Ballester is a 5-foot-9, 150 pound freshman from Elche, Spain. He achieved a top-10 junior ranking and last year he earned an overall national ranking of 132 in Spain. Molina is a 6-foot-1, 184 pound junior from Tarija, Bolivia. Molina played two years at Fresno City College, helping the Rams to a 2004 State Championship.
"I expect Jordi to contribute right away," said head coach Jay Udwadia. "I also suspect that he'll have an outstanding career here at Fresno State.
"Franz has been a pleasant surprise for our program. He really understands the level of competition in the college ranks."
The West Region individual rankings have been released. Junior Jakub Cech is ranked 14th in singles, while junior Charles Irie and senior Sergiu Modoc are 10th in doubles. The preaseason national team rankings will be revealed on the 10th of January.
The Bulldogs begin their season with a double header on Sunday, January 22. The 'Dogs host UC Davis at 11 am, followed by a matchup with Cal Poly at 3 pm at the Wathen Tennis Center.
