FRESNO, Calif. - Seniors Lucia Sainz and Katharina Winterhalter are the top ranked doubles team in the Northwest region. The most recent regional rankings list the Bulldog tandem as the best doubles team after an impressive performance during the fall regional championships in Palo Alto, Calif.
The duo won the regional championship in dominating fashion, defeating then-No. 6 Barnes and Yelsey of Stanford. Sainz and Winterhalter were ranked No. 41 nationally, but that is sure to change when the preseason rankings are revealed on Jan. 10.
In the preaseason regional singles rankings, Sainz and Winterhalter also find themselves ranked. Winterhalter is No. 12, while Sainz is No. 13. Theresa Logar of Stanford ranked No. 1 in the region.
Other news for the Bulldogs includes the arrival of freshman Melanie Gloria. Gloria is a 5-foot-7 freshman from Montreal, Canada. She is a four-time Canadian junior champion and achieved her highest ranking in 2005 at No. 89 ITF. Gloria scored the biggest victory of her career beating Daniela Hantuchova (30e WTA).
"Melanie is a seriously dedicated athlete," said head coach Simon Thibodeau. "She is an incredible addition to this team and we look forward to her immediate impact."
The women's tennis team opens the season on the road at Stanford on Friday, Jan. 27 at 1:30 pm. The Bulldogs host Santa Barbara for the home opener on Saturday, Jan. 28 at 9 a.m. at the Wathen Tennis Center.
