Cech Advances To Semifinal at ITA Regional

FRESNO, Calif. - Senior Jakub Cech stormed into the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Northwest Regional semifinal following a strong performance during his 6-4, 6-4 victory over Joel Kusnierz of Saint Mary's on Sunday in Stanford, Calif.
"Jakub is playing great right now," said head coach Jay Udwadia. "He's certainly capable of winning the tournament, he just needs to stay focused."
Cech has now won four straight. Senior Charles Irie, also playing in Sunday's quarterfinals, lost 6-1, 6-4 to the No. 2-seed Pierre Mouillon of California.
In doubles, Cech and freshman Mirko Zapletal defeated Smith and Stryhas of Sacramento State 8-4 in the round of 16. In the quarters, Cech and Zapletal fell 8-6 to Baca and Roybal of Cal Poly.
Irie and sophomore Rudolf Siwy lost 8-5 in the round of 16 to top-seeded Chu and Slovic of Washington.
Cech will face Mouillon in the semifinal on Monday at 1 p.m.
