FRESNO, Calif. - Senior Jakub Cech continues to play great tennis following an impressive 7-5, 7-6 (4) victory over California's Pierre Mouillon in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Northwest Regional semifinal, Monday in Stanford, Calif. In the second set, Cech broke early to take a 3-0 lead. He led 4-1 before Mouillon broke and eventually tied the match at four. Each held serve until the tiebreaker in which Cech won 7-4.
"Jakub has so much confidence right now," said head coach Jay Udwadia. "He's just playing solid tennis and he definitely feels comfortable heading into Tuesday's final."
Cech will face Washington's Alex Slovic in the final on Tuesday at 11 a.m. Slovic beat Andreas Weber of Hawai'I 7-6 (4), 2-6, 6-2 in the other semifinal. Last season, Cech and Slovic met on two occasions. Slovic beat Cech in the first meeting during last season's quarterfinals of the ITA Regionals. Then during the dual match season, Cech beat Slovic 6-3, 6-2 on Feb. 25.
Cech has won five straight and is currently ranked 30th in the country. Slovic maintains a ranking of No. 24.
Last season Cech advanced as far as the quarters, being eliminated by Slovic. Already this year, Cech has advanced to the final and has won four of five matches in straight sets during the regional.
