Fresno, Calif. - Opportunity awaits for interested students next week, as the women's basketball program will hold open tryouts for walk-on positions with the Fresno State basketball team next week. The tryouts will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 12 in the South Gym.
Often the fan favorites of the team, walk-on athletes play a key role in collegiate athletics. In just the past two seasons at Fresno State, football player Logan Mankins and baseball player Kent Sakamoto are both now playing professionally after joining their respective teams as walk-ons.
Recent women's basketball players who made an impact as walk-on players include Angelica Lopez, a guard from Manteca, Calif. Lopez was a part of the program for three years, seeing time in 27 games, making five assists and five steals as an immediate spark for the team.
With this opportunity, any walk-ons accepted will get a chance to join a team with their highest expectations ever, coming off of the best season in program history, and advancing through two games in the women's postseason NIT last season. Fresno State begins their season on November 7, when the team hosts the Australian Roos in an exhibition match in the Save Mart Center at 7 p.m.
