Fresno, Calif. - Fresno State's Rochelle Jagdeo was named to the NSCAA/addidas NCAA All-West Region team as announced by the coaches' organization. Jagdeo was one of four defenders named to the third-team.
Fresno State had one of their most successful seasons ever, winning the regular season championship primarily on the strength of their defense. The team set a program and conference record with 16 shutouts and did not allow a goal through seven conference games. Nationally, the team finished the year second in shutout percentage and sixth in goals allowed on the year.
Senior captain Rochelle Jagdeo was a large part of that success. Entering the year as the reigning WAC Defensive Player of the Year, Jagdeo anchored a back line that set records in nearly every defensive category, as well as leading the team to their second-ever WAC regular season championship. Along the way, Jagdeo earned her second WAC Defensive Player of the Year award, the first person to win the award twice. Jagdeo was also named Academic All-District VIII for the second consecutive year.
"I'm extremely happy for Rochelle to receive this honor, which is voted on by every coach in the West Region," said head coach Steve Springthorpe. "She certainly deserved it. Rochelle is a player that was extremely vital to the success of our defense as well as the team overall in terms wins and losses. I'm happy for her to receive this individual award, but one that also reflects our success as a team over the past year."
Jagdeo becomes only the second player to win the award in Fresno State history. Jill Pearson, the Bulldogs' leading all-time goal scorer also earned All-West Region third-team honors after scoring 15 goals during the 2000 season.
Fresno State, despite allowing only 10 goals during the season and losing the WAC Championship match in penalty kicks, was not extended a bid to the NCAA Tournament. The Bulldogs finished the year with a record of 13-5-3, and were ranked 13th in the final Soccer Buzz regional poll.
