FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State men's tennis team stayed perfect at home with a convincing 6-1 victory over 59th-ranked UNLV. In a hard fought match, Fresno State won three of four singles matches that went to three sets. The Bulldogs improve to 6-1 on the dual match season, while UNLV fell to 5-2.
"I'm really proud of the way our guys came out today and beat a quality team," said head coach Jay Udwadia. "I have a lot of respect for UNLV and we played them well all throughout the lineup."
Freshman Rudolf Siwy made his Fresno State debut by quickly putting away UNLV's Brett Hunter 6-0, 6-3. Junior Charles Irie was the second to finish in singles play, beating Elliot Wronski in three sets. Junior Jakub Cech, having won the first set, was down 5-3, then 5-4 in the second set. He saved two set points and battled back to win in the set's tiebreaker.
Cech and Siwy, both from the Czech Republic, played together in No. 2 doubles for the first time, beating Wronski/Hunter, 8-5. Irie and sophomore Sam Tadevosian won 8-5 at No. 3 doubles to clinch the doubles point for Fresno State. Tadevosian won a three-set match in singles, as did freshman Jordi Ballester.
It was Fresno State's first victory over a ranked opponent, giving the Bulldogs momentum heading into Saturday's match at Arizona. The 'Dogs face the Wildcats in Tuscon, Ariz., at Noon.
