FRESNO, Calif. - The 41st-ranked Fresno State men's tennis team coasted to a 7-0 shut out of visiting DePaul, Wednesday evening at the Wathen Tennis Center. In an all-around solid effort, the Bulldogs swept the doubleheader, beating Saint Mary's 6-1 earlier in the day. The Bulldogs won two of three doubles matches to earn the doubles point, then blew away the Blue Demons at singles, winning all six matches. Fresno State improved to 11-5 on the dual match season, while DePaul fell to 5-10.
"It was nice to get two wins today," said head coach Jay Udwadia. "The way the guys were competing today, I'm sure they would have been excited to play one more."
In doubles, junior Charles Irie and freshman Rudolf Siwy played at the No. 1 spot for the first time, edging Erik Huffman and Austin Doerner 8-6. At No. 2 doubles, senior Sam Gibbs and Jordi Ballester, playing together for the first time this year, dominated Jack Komar and Will Wang 8-3.
"I saw a lot of improvement in doubles today from last week's matches," said Udwadia. "We continue to build confidence for the last stretch of our season. The guys will enjoy a little time off from competition and we'll be fresh and geared up for the Boise State match."
In singles, five Bulldogs won in straight sets, and senior Sergiu Modoc battled from one set down to win in the super-tiebreaker. Gibbs, a Fresno native, quickly put away Will Wang at the No. 6 spot, winning 6-2, 6-2.
Fresno State returns to action when it hosts its biggest match of the season at home, a showdown with Boise State on April 2 Noon. The Bulldogs will look to remain undefeated at home and take out a WAC foe in the process. Fresno State's final home match, Senior Day, will be on April 7, at 2:30 p.m. against Pacific.
