Fresno State Breezes Past Saint Mary's, 6-1

FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State men's tennis team breezed past visiting Saint Mary's 6-1, Wednesday afternoon at the Wathen Tennis Center in the first of a doubleheader. Junior Charles Irie won the clinching match, defeating Julien Tiznot in straight sets. Junior Franz Molina, playing at No. 6 singles, was down 5-1 in the first set, only to battle back and win 7-6, 6-4 over Alp Ozpinar. The Bulldogs remained undefeated at home and improved to 10-5 overall, while Saint Mary's fell to 4-7.
The Bulldogs set the tone early in doubles, winning on all three courts by the same score of 8-3. Seniors Sam Gibbs and Sergiu Modoc, entering the doubles rankings for the first time this year at No. 49, were dominating in their victory over Tizot and Martin Marechal.
Modoc carried the momentum into singles, beating Marechal in straight sets at the No. 1 spot in the lineup. Modoc is 2-0 this season in the No. 1 spot, improving his overall dual match record to 8-7. Freshmen Jordi Ballester and Rudolf Siwy also won their singles matches in convincing fashion.
The Bulldogs continue dual match play immediately with a 6 p.m. battle tonight against DePaul. Depaul enters the match with a record of 5-9 and comes to the Wathen Tennis Center for the first time.
