Fresno State continues its outdoor season this weekend in Chico, Calif., with the second of back-to-back Northern California Collegiate Series meets. Both men and women will be participating in Saturday's event, which serves as a tuneup for next weekend's Cal Poly Invitational. The Bulldogs will bring a large contingent of athletes on both sides to this week's meet.
Season Gets Underway In Turlock
Fresno State netted six first-place finishes over the weekend at the Stanislaus Open in Turlock, Calif. Two of those came from Ryan Moore, who ran a 47.85 in the 400-meters and 52.95 in the 400-meter hurdles. The Bulldog's 4x100 and 4x400-meter relay teams also checked in first. Taylor Franzman reached 14-6 (4.42m) in the pole vault to win the event. Three Bulldog throwers on the women's side posted NCAA Regional qualifying marks on Saturday afternoon, highlighting Fresno State's performance at the Stanislaus Open in Turlock. La'Sha Hill (shot put), Katie Richardson (discus) and Mallory Webb (javelin) all surpassed the NCAA Regional qualifying standard as the Bulldog women's team registered 11 first-place finishes. Hill threw a career-best 48-4.50 (14.74m) in the shot put, Richardson's toss of 161-5 (49.20m) in the discus led the field and Webb recorded a mark of 149-6 (45.58m) in the javelin. Other first-place finishers included: Christina Lopez (58.19) in the 400-meters, Zinzi Evans (2:16.20) in the 800-meters and Jamie Farley (168-11) in the hammer.
Pagel Named To World Indoor Championships Staff
Fresno State assistant track and field coach Ramona Pagel has been named to the coaching staff for Team USA at the 2006 IAAF World Indoor Track and Field Championships in Moscow, Russia. Pagel, who works specifically with the men's and women's throws as a member of the Bulldog coaching staff, will serve in that same capacity for Team USA on the women's side when the World Indoor Championships take place Mar. 10-12 at the Olimpiyskiy Sport Palace Complex. Pagel arrived at Fresno State after spending the previous three seasons as an assistant coach for the track and field and cross country programs at Southeastern Louisiana. In addition her coaching background, Pagel has enjoyed success at all levels. A four-time Olympian ('84, '88, '92, '96), Pagel was a gold medalist at the 1987 Pan Am Games and is the American record holder in the shot put with a distance of 66-2.50.
Women's Indoor Track Places Ninth At WAC Championships
Fresno State totaled 30 points and placed ninth overall at the 2006 WAC Indoor Championships at Boise, Idaho. Louisiana Tech successfully defended its title, scoring 131 points to claim the championship. Runner-up Idaho notched 90 points, followed by Utah State in third with 78. Fresno State was without an event champion in the meet but registered two top-five finishes on the final day. Renee Winston crossed the line at a personal-best 57.14 in the finals of the 400-meters to take fifth overall. La'Sha Hill placed fifth in the shot put with a career-best toss of 47-3.75 (14.42m).
