Bulldogs Roll Past Middle Tennessee, 6-1

FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State men's tennis team came out swinging Wednesday evening at the Wathen Tennis Center and toppled No. 38 Middle Tennesse, 6-1. With an impressive showing in doubles, the Bulldogs fought hard all night, winning four of five singles matches that went to three sets. Senior Sergiu Modoc won in straight sets during the only two set match of the evening. Fresno State improved to 8-3 on the year, while Middle Tennesse fell to 6-5.
"This was a big win for the program," said head coach Jay Udwadia. "Middle Tennessee is a dangerous team and we capitalized on some key points in the three-set matches. This will definitely give the guys momentum heading into Saturday's match against San Diego."
Modoc and fellow senior Sam Gibbs defeated second-ranked Born and Siljestrom 8-7 (2) at No. 1 doubles. Born and Siljestrom, both 6-foot-9, had been undefeated during dual match play until Modoc and Gibbs cut them down to size.
"Serg and Sam had a great win for us at No. 1 doubles," Udwadia said. "Then Serg came out in singles and took care of business."
Juniors Jakub Cech and Charles Irie, sophomore Sam Tadevosian and freshman Jordi Ballester all won in three sets. Cech and Ballester both won in the third set tiebreaker.
The Bulldogs return to action this Saturday at 2 p.m. when 23rd-ranked San Diego comes to town.
