Women Place Third, Men Fourth At Cal-Nevada Championships

FRESNO, Calif.- The Fresno State women's track and field squad placed third overall while the men took fourth as the Cal-Nevada Championships concluded Saturday afternoon at Warmerdam Field.
The Bulldog women, who claimed the 2005 team title, placed third with 112 points behind champion UCLA (182 points) and runner-up Cal State Northridge (122.50). Fresno State recorded two first-place finishes on the afternoon.
One of those came from Mallory Webb in the javelin. Webb, the only current All-American on the Bulldog roster, threw 164-7 (50.17m) to lead the field. She has already qualified for NCAA Regionals.
In the discus, Katie Richardson established a personal-best of 170-11 (52.10m) to take first. Right behind her was La'Sha Hill, who tossed a career-high 161-8 (49.29) for a runner-up finish. Hill notched another personal-best in the shot put with a throw of 49-4.25 (15.04m) to place second.
Fresno State's men's squad checked in fourth with 90 points, trailing winner UCLA (246.50), Cal State Northridge (105) and Cal State Fullerton (95).
The only first-place finish on the men's side was credited to Ryan Moore. On the cusp of qualifying for NCAA Regionals all season, Moore finally broke through when he ran a season-best 51.85 to win the title in the 400-meter hurdles.
Brian Vazquez placed third in the hammer throw at 184-4 (56.20m) while Jesse Smith took third in the 100-meters with a time of 10.94.
Also, the 4x100-meter relay crew placed third at 40.95 while the 4x400-meter team earned a runner-up finish in the second flight at 3:13.95.
Fresno State next competes in the Rafer Johnson/JJK Invitational next weekend in Westwood, Calif.
