FRESNO, Calif. - The 24th-ranked Fresno State women's tennis team was scheduled to play a doubleheader tomorrow, April 15, against Santa Clara and Saint Mary's. However, Saint Mary's head coach Lisa Alipaz, an expecting mother, is unable to travel with the team. Therefore, Fresno State has rearranged its schedule for the final day of the regular season. Fresno State and Santa Clara, originally scheduled for 9 a.m., has been rescheduled for 11:30 a.m.
The Bulldogs are 14-6 in dual matches this year heading into the final contest of the regular season against Santa Clara. Saturday's match is senior day and the Bulldogs will honor their two seniors: Lucia Sainz and Katharina Winterhalter. The two women are currently ranked No. 6 in the country in doubles with an overall record of 31-8 and 15-5 in dual matches. Sainz is only two wins shy of earning 100 career doubles victories, while Winterhalter needs four more wins for the same feat. Winterhalter earned her 100th career singles win on April 9 in an exciting win against Sladjana Kos of Loyola Marymount.
Along with Sainz and Winterhalter, freshman Melanie Gloria and sophomore Jacqueline Haskett also are ranked in doubles at No. 51. The tandem is a stellar 14-1 in dual matches. Gloria is ranked No. 21 in singles, while Winterhalter owns a No. 96 singles ranking.
The Western Athletic Conference Championships begin next week in Boise, Idaho. The Bulldogs are the four-time defending WAC Champions and will look to make it five in a row.
