FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State men's tennis team closed out the regular season with a 5-2 road win at Santa Barbara on Sunday afternoon. The team won the doubles point for an early lead and then won four of six singles matches to solidify the victory. Fresno State finished the regular season with a 13-6 dual match record including a perfect 10-0 at home.
Although 49th-ranked Sam Gibbs and Sergiu Modoc lost at No. 1 doubles, the rest of the team stepped up to get the doubles point. Junior Charles Irie and freshman Rudolf Siwy beat Hohenstein and Thorsten 8-5, while junior Jakub Cech and sophomore Sam Tadevosian edged Stern and Taylor 9-7.
Irie won convincingly in singles, winning 6-1, 6-1, to earn his 15th win of the dual match season. Siwy and Tadevosian also won in straight sets while freshman Jordi Ballester won in three sets. Ballester was down one set, but then came back to dominate the final two sets and give the Bulldogs another road win.
The Bulldogs are back in action when they head to Boise State for the Western Athletic Conference championships beginning April 20.
