FRESNO, Calif. - The Bulldogs won the doubles point and three singles matches to clinch a 4-0 victory over Idaho in the first round of the Western Athletic Conference tournament, Friday in Boise, Idaho. Fresno State is on a quest for its first conference title since 1999 when it beat SMU 4-3 in the final. With the win, the Bulldogs improve to 14-6 on the year, while Idaho fell to 2-21.
"It was nice to get through the first round with a good win today," said head coach Jay Udwadia. "Now, all our focus is on Hawai'i."
Last season, the Bulldogs tied for fifth in the WAC after losing in the first round to Tulsa. This year, the team is the second seed with plenty of momentum going into tomorrow's semifinal. In doubles, the Bulldogs won easily at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots in the lineup clinching the point before No. 37 Sam Gibbs and Sergiu Modoc could finish.
In singles, No. 49 Jakub Cech, junior Chrales Irie and freshman Jordi Ballester all won in straight sets to decide the match early. Fresno State last won a first round match in 2003 when it beat Hawai'i 4-0.
Fresno State faces Hawai'i in the semifinals on Saturday, April 22, at 8 a.m. PT. Follow all of Fresno State's tournament action on gobulldogs.com or on wacsports.com.
