FRESNO, Calif. - The men's golf team held its 2006 awards luncheon Thursday afternoon at Belmont Country Club and honored student-athletes for their successes during the season.
Senior Jason Anthony was named the Most Valuable Player. Anthony, who won the Saint Mary's Invitational, led the team in scoring average at 72.72. He had 12 rounds under par, a low round of 66, and seven rounds in the 60s. In addition to earning Western Athletic Conference Athlete of the Week honors, he was named to the second-team all-WAC.
"Jason has been a rock for us this year," said head coach Mike Watney. "The highlight of his year, though, was his win at the Saint Mary's Invitational. He seemed to have a lot of bad things happen in the tournament, but he overcame the adversity and didn't let bad things derail his mind or his game."
Mark Modglin, a senior accounting major, received the Bulldog Scholar Award. A Golf Coaches Association of America All-American Scholar, Modglin has been on the President's List six times and is also an Academic All-WAC honoree. He led the Bulldogs to victory last year at the BYU Cougar Classic and also won the individual title there with rounds of 66-64-72 - 202 (-14).
"We know Mark is a brain, but he is also a talented golfer who has had stretches of brilliance," said Watney. "He has been a leader, a model student, and an excellent golfer."
Senior Jonny Rosa was named the Most Outstanding Player. Rosa shot 67 - his low round of the year - four times, and had the team's best three-round total at 205. He shot 210 or better four times during the season, and took home the individual title at Cal's Alister MacKenzie Invitational. WAC coaches also voted him all-conference.
"Jonny opened Cal's tournament with a 71 and then caught fire with 67 and 67," said Watney. "On the last hole, he made one of the most amazing up and downs I have ever seen. They say that superstars think differently than us normal people. I looked at his shot and saw nothing, but he looked at it and said, `I've got this shot.'"
Matt Shaw received the Outstanding Freshman award. He hit his low round of 68 twice during the year, and led the team with five eagles. He was also named the WAC Freshman of the Year.
"Every time you recruit someone you have high hopes for them, but Matt has exceeded my expectations," said Watney. "His finish at San Diego State's tournament is a big reason we are going to the NCAA regional next week. Matt is off to a great start in his college career."
Senior Brian Kelley received the Bulldog Award. He averaged 73.48 on the year and tied the team-best low round with 66. He made two eagles at the WAC Championship en route to a third-place finish.
"Brian is a guy that makes me shake my head in wonder," said Watney. "He is so physically gifted for the game of golf that he does things that make your jaw drop in amazement."
Senior Ryan McDonald was named the Most Improved Player. He finished the season with a 74.73 stroke average and finished the WAC Championship with a tournament-low round of 67.
"Ryan's year didn't start as planned, but the end of the story is shaping up nicely," said Watney. "He will be going to the NCAA regional in good form."
Fresno State heads to the NCAA West Regional May 18-20 in Tucson, Ariz.
