FRESNO, Calif.- Senior Jamie Farley (Clovis, Calif.) and junior Andrea Buckner (Yorba Linda, Calif.) have been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VIII first team for track and field and cross country. The team is selected by sports information directors from the district.
Farley, a mass communication and journalism major, owns a 3.97 GPA while Buckner, a liberal studies major, has maintained a 3.8 GPA. As part of the 10-member first team, Farley and Buckner advance to the national ballot for Academic All-America consideration.
District VIII is comprised of universities from Alaska, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Washington and British Columbia.
Close to earning a postseason berth all season long, Farley qualified for her first appearance at NCAA Regionals when she tossed a personal-best 177-8 (54.16m) to place seventh in the hammer throw at WAC Outdoor Championships on May 13. Two weeks later at NCAA Regionals, Farley topped that mark with a throw of 182-8 (55.68m) but did not advance into the national round.
Farley, who currently ranks fourth in school history in the hammer throw, is a three-time Fresno State and WAC Scholar-Athlete. Farley did not compete in 2003-04, as she was serving a Mormon mission.
Buckner, a two-time Fresno State and WAC Scholar-Athlete, was a second team All-WAC selection in cross country in the fall. Buckner, who also competes on the Bulldog track and field team, is a three-time NCAA regional qualifier in cross country. Winning her first career invitational title as well as garnering her first WAC Runner of the Week award last season, she has been the Bulldogs' top runner in 14 consecutive meets.
A two-time Academic All-WAC honoree, Buckner also established a personal-best 5,000-meter time of 18:11.2 at the 2005 UC Riverside Invitational - a time that ranks as the 18th fastest 5K mark in school history. Currently holding Fresno State's top times in the 3,000 and 5,000 this outdoor season, Buckner does own one individual conference championship title when she captured the 2005 track and field WAC outdoor steeplechase crown (10:39.89).
At the 2006 Kiwanis Torch of Excellence last month, Farley was honored as a recipient of the Kiwanis Torchlighter Award while Buckner was one of two Bulldogs honored with the George Ilg Memorial Award (school award for athletics, academics and community service).
