Cech Keeps Raking In The Awards

FRESNO, Calif. - Junior Jakub Cech just keeps bringing in the awards. Most recently Cech was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District second team, released May 25, 2006.
To be eligible for the Academic All-District teams, a student-athletes must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director. Since the program's inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 14,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA covering all NCAA championship sports.
Cech was honored with the Harold Haak Scholarship award at Fresno State's Kiwanis Torch of Excellence ceremony in May. The Harold Haak Scholarship is presented each year to Fresno State's most outstanding male and female athletes with continuing elegibility.
Also in May, Cech was named the ITA West Region's Arthur Ashe Award winner for Leadership and Sportsmanship. The Arthur Ashe Award for Leadership and Sportsmanship goes to a player who has exhibited outstanding sportsmanship and leadership as well as scholastic, extracurricular and tennis achievements.
For as many academic awards Cech has received this season, he has earned his due on the court as well. He was the WAC Player of the Year, simply dominating during the WAC tournament. He was also named to the first-team All-WAC in singles. Cech was the 2005-06 Fresno State men's tennis team MVP as well.
Cech earned a birth in the NCAA singles tournament and proved worthy, beating Eric Claesson of Mississippi in three sets to advance to the second round. His final ITA ranking was 46th, and he had been ranked as high as No. 36.
