FRESNO, Calif. - With the 2006 college football season a little more than 70 days from beginning, several Bulldog football players are appearing on the national radar.
Senior center Kyle Young, a 2003 first-team freshman All-American and 2005 All-WAC first-team selection was selected to the 2006 Outland Trophy Watch List. The Football Writers Association of America has the list today, which consists of 54 standout linemen from around the country who have been nominated for consideration in the preseason.
Young has started all 39 games of his career at center for the Bulldogs, who has played in seven straight bowl games. Young, a senior from Fallbrook, Calif., is already on the watch list for the Rimington Award, given to the nation's top center.
"It's nice to see Kyle get this kind of preseason recognition," said head coach Pat Hill. "I believe he's the best center in the country and if you look at what he's accomplished during his career against some of the best defensive players in the nation, there's no question he should be right up there and considered for the Outland Trophy."
The Outland Trophy has been awarded to the best offensive or defensive lineman in college football since 1946. The winner is selected by the FWAA's All-America Committee, which selects the association's 25-man team and picks three Outland Trophy finalists.
The 2005 Outland Trophy announcement will be on Dec. 7 in Orlando, Fla., on the ESPN Home Depot College Football Awards Show. The Outland Trophy presentation banquet, sponsored by the Greater Omaha Sports Committee and First Data Corporation, is set for Jan. 11, 2007, in Omaha, Neb. Minnesota center Greg Eslinger won the 2005 Outland Trophy. He is only the third center to claim major-college football's third-oldest award.
The Outland Trophy has been awarded annually by the FWAA since 1946. It is named after the late John Outland, a lineman at Pennsylvania at the turn of the century.
