FRESNO, Calif.- Senior Jamie Farley (Clovis, Calif.) has been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America third team for track and field. Farley advanced to the national ballot after qualifying for All-District VIII accolades. Both teams are selected through voting by CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America).
As the university's 36th Academic All-American since 1985, Farley becomes the first track and field student-athlete to be honored since Melissa Price was a first team recipient in 1999.
Farley, a mass communication and journalism major, owns a 3.97 GPA. Close to earning a postseason berth all season long, Farley qualified for her first appearance at NCAA Regionals when she tossed a personal-best 177-8 (54.16m) to place seventh in the hammer throw at WAC Outdoor Championships on May 13. Two weeks later at NCAA Regionals, Farley topped that mark with a throw of 182-8 (55.68m) but did not advance into the national round.
At the 2006 Kiwanis Torch of Excellence last month, Farley was honored as a recipient of the Kiwanis Torchlighter Award. Farley, who currently ranks fourth in school history in the hammer throw, is a three-time Fresno State and WAC Scholar-Athlete. Farley did not compete in 2003-04, as she was serving a Mormon mission.
