FRESNO, Calif.- Junior Mallory Webb (Dundee, Ore.) placed ninth overall during Wednesday's javelin qualifying session at the 2006 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, earning a berth in Friday's national final as she attempts to earn All-America honors for the second time in her career.
Webb, the only All-American on the current Bulldog roster and the program's first since 1999, recorded her best throw of the meet at 158-3 (48.23m) in her first attempt. That toss was good enough to place seventh in her flight and ninth overall, as the top 12 competitors qualified for the national final. Webb threw 47.05m and 41.92m on her next two tries.
Making her third career NCAA Championships appearance, Webb is hoping to duplicate her breakthrough freshman campaign. In 2004, the junior threw a then-personal-best 162-10 (49.64m) to place seventh overall in the national final after coming in ninth after the qualifying round. Webb was the only freshman to reach the national final that year.
Back on Apr. 7, Webb established a personal-best throw of 169-10 (51.76m) at the Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner-Kersee Invitational. That same throw would have ranked second during Wednesday's qualifying round, as only UNC Wilmington's Anna Raynor registered a better mark (176-5 or 53.77m).
Friday's final is scheduled for 1:15 p.m.
Junior Katie Richardson (Montague, Calif.), making her NCAA Championships debut, also participated in the javelin qualifying round but did not advance. Richardson, who has notched personal-bests in four different throwing events this year, entered Wednesday's competition having thrown a career-best 163-1 (49.71m) in the javelin.
However, Richardson's best effort on Wednesday checked in at 141-8 (43.17m). That throw came in her first attempt, which followed with a 40.95m and a foul.
The first Bulldog to qualify for multiple events at NCAA Championships since Joe Vasquez in 2004, Richardson also competed in the discus. Her best toss of the day came in at 147-5 (44.94m), short of the standard needed to reach the national final.
Richardson's personal-best discus throw stands at 170-11 (52.10m), and that same toss would have ranked sixth during Wednesday's qualifying round.
Competition concludes Thursday as junior Ryan Moore (Visalia, Calif.) makes his NCAA Championships debut in the 400-meter hurdles. Moore, a two-time WAC champion and three-time NCAA Regional qualifier, will participate in the first round at 4:30 p.m. He is coming off the best performance of his career, as he notched a personal-best while breaking a 28-year-old school record with a time of 50.51 at NCAA Regionals in Provo, Utah on May 27.
