Fresno, Calif. - For the third consecutive year, Fresno State baseball has produced a Freshman All-American, as second baseman Erik Wetzel earned the honor from "Louisville Slugger" and Collegiate Baseball for the 2006 season.
Wetzel, a freshman from Chino, Calif., was a first-team All-WAC selection at second base, hitting .325 with 11 doubles, 1 home run, two triples, 27 RBI as well as stealing 10 bases on the year.
The top second baseman on the Freshman All-American team for 2006, Wetzel is the fourth Freshman All-American for the Bulldogs in the last three seasons. Beau Mills was named to the team in 2005, and both Nick Moresi and Christian Vitters earned the nod in 2004. Both Moresi and Vitters were selected in this year's MLB draft, as Moresi was picked in the third round by the Astros and Vitters was grabbed by the Oakland A's in the ninth round.
