FRESNO, Calif. - The awards continue to come for Fresno State senior golfer Mark Modglin. Modglin, who graduated in May, was named to the 2005-06 Golf Coaches Association of America All-American Scholar team. The award honors those players who have achieved high levels of accomplishment both scholastically and on the course.
A team captain for this past season, in which the Bulldogs finished second in the WAC and advanced to the NCAA Western Regional Championships, Modglin posted a 3.91 cumulative GPA in Accounting. He accepted a position with Deloitte & Touche upon graduation.
"I want to congratulate Mark on this outstanding award," said head coach Mike Watney. "This is a difficult award to win because it that takes into account both outstanding grades and golf prowess. Mark set a very high standard on our team for his outstanding play and academic accomplishments and that's a major reason he was selected a team captain this year."
Modglin will be best remembered by Bulldog fans for winning the 2005 BYU Cougar Classic, in which he scorched the course with a 14-under par round that led the Dogs to the team championships in a very tough field.
Modglin is the 16th Bulldog to earn this honor since the award program began in 1989. Others honored include: David Sutherland (1989), Tim Wilcox (1989), Per Nyman (1991 & 1992), Geoff Griffin (1991), John Barrington (1995, 1996), David Burroughs (1995), Gary Glazier (1998), Josh Watney (1999, 2000), Dustin Smith (2001, 2002) and Ryan Carter (2003, 2005).
