'Dogs Picked To Win 2006 WAC Title
FRESNO, Calif.- One day after being picked by WAC coaches to win the conference crown, Fresno State placed four student-athletes on the 2006 Preseason All-WAC team- including the projected Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year.
Fresno State, which captured its first-ever WAC title in 2005 and qualified for the NCAA Tournament for only the second time in school history, led all schools with four selections. Two-time first team All-WAC standout Cortney Sobrero was tabbed as the Preseason Offensive Player of the Year while 2005 WAC Defensive Player of the Year Rochelle Jagdeo collected her second career Preseason honor.
Sophomore midfielder Alison Sill and senior goalkeeper Angie Larsen were also named Preseason All-WAC selections as Fresno State dominated the voting for the 11-member squad.
Yesterday, Fresno State (10-10-2 in 2005) was picked to win the WAC in a league vote by the coaches.
Sobrero, a first team All-WAC pick in 2004 and 2005, led the Bulldogs in shots (80) and shots on goal (32). Her six goals were tied for the team lead.
Jagdeo, one of five players to start all 22 games, anchored a backline that allowed just five goals in WAC play and helped the Bulldogs register eight shutouts. She was also named Preseason WAC Defensive Player of the Year in 2005.
Sill, a second-team All-WAC honoree as a freshman, added two goals and four assists for a total of eight points in 20 contests. She also took 29 shots, 17 of which were on goal.
Larsen posted seven shutouts on the year and made 56 saves while posting a 0.92 GAA in her first collegiate season as the Bulldog's starter. A 2005 first team All-WAC selection, she posted a 0.16 GAA in regular-season WAC contests.
Fresno State opens the year with a pair of exhibition matches, beginning with Fresno Pacific on Friday, Aug. 18. Fresno State hosts San Francisco on Friday, Aug. 25 in the season opener at Bulldog Stadium.
